Having a complex medical condition can be overwhelming and stressful to manage. And often there are multiple to juggle. Our process is to take on that mountain one step at a time.
We practice non-diet nutrition which may sound confusing. Don’t those with a chronic condition need a diet to help manage that condition? Well, there are definitely nutrition considerations that will absolutely contribute to managing your condition well. When we say non-diet nutrition, we mean no weight-loss diet plans! This may bring another question to mind. Wont weight-loss improve my wellbeing? This is where the evidence becomes dicey.
Currently, there is no evidence (yes NO EVIDENCE!) that shows successful weight loss is possible past 2-5years. In fact, weight cycling can be detrimental to both physical and mental health. In practice, having a weight-loss goal instead of health-based goal can lead to negative outcomes such as:
- Feelings of failure despite making positive behaviour changes when the scale doesn’t move.
- Having your self-worth linked to a number on the scale which has so many contributing variables (like fluid retention, bowel movements or medication changes).
What many health professionals and researchers are now coming to understand is that health behaviour changes are what brings about the majority of health improvements not the weight-loss itself.
We work though the changes collaboratively that you are most likely to have success with. Also, we target those that will have the biggest impact on your wellbeing. Nutrition information is often confusing and can be misleading. It can seem that recommendations are forever changing. We can help you to sort through the fact from fiction.
We respect that you are the expert in your own self. Using evidence-based practice, we support you to make health-focused goals. Our approach leads to increased sustainable, enjoyable self-care behaviours.
We provide nutrition advice to treat a wide range of medical issues including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome to name a few. You can see a more extensive list of our services here.
